Information Systems


Business Technology Management (BTM) is offered as a major option in the Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) program at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa. The objective of this option is to equip program graduates with the ability to lead and support the strategic use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the digital transformation of organizations. Graduates of our BTM option are typically employed in roles that bridge the gap between business and information technologies by helping solve business problems, develop business strategies, and improve organizational processes and performance by using technology-based solutions.

Our BTM option is highly aligned with the mandate and objectives of BTM programs as defined by the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC), and collectively, our courses cover all ITAC BTM competency areas and learning outcomes. As a result, graduates from our BTM option are able to pursue various certification paths to acquire the BTM Associate or BTM Professional designations from ITAC. We are also currently in the process of obtaining ITAC program accreditation for our BTM program.

The courses in our program provide a comprehensive coverage of topics with an aim to help students develop competencies including the following: studying business problem through various skills including systems thinking, and quantitative analysis; analyzing business processes; evaluating new technologies in terms of strengths, weaknesses, and business relevance; effectively planning, managing and leading business technology projects; creating implementation and business change management plans; and evaluating the effectiveness, appropriateness and usability of an implemented information systems.
