Bachelor Programs
The program is located at the intersection between business administration and informatics. Thus, it qualifies students to work in all kinds of areas ranging from business administration over consulting to programming. As a result, the chances on the job market are above average. Students develop the abilities to analyse business processes, organizational structures, and new developments from a technical and a business perspective. In addition, students learn to apply methods for evaluating IT investments and for planning IT projects. Among others, students are employed by companies from the software-, automotive- and media industry, in IT-controlling, in financial institutions or in consulting companies.
The bachelor programm consists of three pillars:
- Informatics and mathematics
- Information systems
- Business administration, economics, and law
4/3 principle
In addition to a sound education in law and business sciences, which corresponds to 2/3 of a regular program in business administration, our students complete 2/3 of a program in informatics. This results in the successful 4/3 principle from Darmstadt, which stands for a very challenging and interdisciplinary program.
Master Programs
Students from other programs have the opportunity to choose one of the following majors in information systems:
- IT-Controlling
- Information Systems and Information Management
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management
In these majors, important topics like entrepreneurship or innovation are discussed.
The master program builds on the bachelor program on information systems. Thus, it is located at the intersection between business administration and informatics, as well.
The master program is more research oriented, but still provides various opportunities to get in contact with companies (projects, thesis, seminars...). Students can select from various majors in business administration and informatics. As entrepreneurship becomes more and more important, in addition to traditional courses, we offer various courses on entrepreneurship.
Courses
Bachelor in Information Systems
In this course students get an overview of the basics of Software Business & Information Management. The contents include:
- Basics of information systems (tasks and targets of information systems)
- Technical aspects (hard- and software, information and digital goods, packaged software vs. custom software, network and data management)
- Organisation of IT in companies (organisation of Information Management, Outsourcing and Offshoring, Cloud Computing, Standardization and the Standardization Problem)
- IT investment decisions
- Information as a “resource” for decision making
In this lab, students work in a team in cooperation with industry partners on a software project. The aims of this lab are
- to experience the autonomous implementation of a software project under practice-oriented conditions,
- to train the use of modern development methods and tools,
- to fulfill various tasks within the project team,
- to get soft skills in dealing with clients and with other team members.
Different Majors in Information Systems
In this course, students get an overview of the economic aspects of enterprise foundation (entrepreneurship). Theory and empirics of the evolution of markets represent another important topic. Moreover, this one week condensed course offers a practical forum to support the foundation of an enterprise respectively a Web Startup. Students get a feeling for real life venture creation by going through the steps of taking an idea from inception to launch. In the experiential learning seminar, the professor gives a lecture at the beginning of each day of the workshop. Then the teams work on case studies. Next, they present and discuss the findings related to the topic of that day. The methodology discussed in lecture and the case study is applied to the (IT) venture idea of the students. The students also have to deal with intercultural aspects of corporate foundations.

His former academic position was University of Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München), where he received his PhD and worked as Assistant Professor (Habilitand). In 2015, he received but turned down an appointment to an Endowed Chair in Information Systems (W3) from the University of Cologne. Furthermore, he is interested in how users interact with novel IT-related concepts in the Internet such as web personalization, online communities, or viral loop triggers. Beyond this and more generally, he is interested in the fields of entrepreneurship, service research, behavioral economics and psychology, and prefers to work empirically.
Prof. Benlian has cooperated with scholars and companies around the globe in several research and consulting projects. He is also a committed entrepreneurship trainer who regularly gives workshops in developing countries on behalf of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to support economic development and employment creation programs.
