Energy Informatics

Energy Informatics involves analyzing, designing, and implementing systems to increase the efficiency of energy demand and supply systems. This requires the collection and analysis of data used to optimize energy distribution and consumption networks. Students will leverage the necessary information systems competencies and multi-disciplinary knowledge to increase societal energy efficiency. Sustainability is usually defined as “meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainability is currently one of the most important issues facing our world, and will continue to be so for decades as it will take a long-term to reverse some adverse environmental changes. Information System (IS) and Information Technology (IT) play a critical role in sustainable development, and Energy Informatics is an approach to addressing sustainability issues and reducing energy consumption. By learning about Energy Informatics, students can leverage the necessary computing competencies and multi-disciplinary knowledge to contribution to creating a sustainable future.   Learning Outcomes   Students completing the course will (1) be able to explain why the world needs an information strategy for addressing environmental challenges (2) be able to explain why some businesses are adopting sustainability and energy reduction as dominant core missions (3) have a comprehensive understanding of the importance of energy to the global and US economies (4) be able to explain the principles of Energy Informatics to a business leader and use illustrative cases to support the explanation (5) be able apply the Energy Informatics framework (6) be able to analyze and visualize an energy data stream (7) be able to apply optimization techniques to an energy distribution or consumption problem
