Institute of Architecture and Planning

Vaduz, Liechtenstein
Environmental Design, Urban, Community and Regional Planning

The Institute of Architecture and Planning at the University of Liechtenstein can look back on a tradition of more than half a century.

This means that the Institute benefits from continuity and from a multifarious global network, which is reflected in the international composition of the student body. In recent decades architectural teaching has undergone a radical shift from ‘mere’ building towards engagement with the economically, ecologically and socially relevant themes of sustainable building. The role of architecture today is increasingly seen in combination with the concept of planning. The term is associated with the totality of all the processes currently running in a given area, and their interaction with the environment. This entails a principal focus on the interface of spatial planning and sustainable economic and cultural effects.

Design Studios and electives
Diverse design studios give students the opportunity to engage with this topic on a variety of scales, applying a multitude of design and research methodologies and preparing them for the demands of the broad field of architecture and urban design. Together with a series of elective modules, they enable students to design their own curriculum and thus develop their personal interests in a detailed manner.

Personal and international
Small classes and design studios provide a personal, creative and productive learning and research environment. Currently, students of more than 30 different nationalities create a unique cosmopolitan atmosphere on a compact campus within a stunning alpine setting. A compulsory semester abroad at one of the institute’s international, high-profile partner universities helps students to test their acquired knowledge in a different cultural and academic environment and offers new perspectives and opportunities.
